The Future of DJ’ing: Emulator Multitouch DJ Software

The Emulator by Smithson Martin is a dedicated multitouch midi controller software for DJ’s.

The system was created by two DJ’s, Argentinian based Pablo Martin and Alan Smithson from Canada. It’s currently designed for use with Windows 7 and their native Multi-Touch configuration. A version of Emulator for Mac OSX, is planned for mid-2011. Emulator currently works for Traktor Pro only but versions for Ableton, Serato, Virtual DJ are in development.

The Emulator touch screen you see on all the videos works by using a rear projection film on the backside of the glass. A short throw projector is mounted below the screen and projected up onto the glass making the image visible to both the DJ and the crowd. The actual screen is where the magic happens. The screen has hundreds of infrared sensors that form a grid over the glass and when your finger breaks this grid, the screen knows where you are touching and voila!

The Emulator is available as stand alone software for your own tablet or multitouch device. You can also purchase the transparent touch screen from the company in a 32″ & 42″ size or even custom make your own by special order.

This one’s sure to be in the clubs everywhere soon, especially as the market opens and similar products start to emerge.

The system first debuted @ The Amsterdam Dance Event October 2010 and we’ve been following it’s development…here are some videos of in action that also show it’s progress along the way.
