► Elliot Ross Trio Live @ Curio Chicago

On Monday November 5, 2012 Elliot Ross [guitar], Anton Hatwich [bass] and Charles Rumback [drums] performed two sets at Curio in Chicago’s Loop. The atmosphere was dark brick walls, candlelight and old fashioned cocktails. Their sets included original material as well as modern versions of music by John Coltrane, Jimi Hendrix, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, spinachprince, Ornette Coleman and Billie Holiday.

The trio is currently recording a studio album which will feature a fresh batch of original compositions and improvisations. This will not be your typical ‘jazz guitar trio’ record. The music will be sent back in time, far into the future and back to the present.

About the trio:

Elliot Ross // guitar

Elliot Ross focuses much of his musical energy on his compositional efforts for spinachprince, providing harmonic structure along with layers of imaginative keyboards, pianos and guitars. He has also been playing a weekly duo jazz standards gig in Chicago at Sapori Trattoria restaurant for over 4 years as well as playing in countless bands and various ensembles over the years. Elliot also records and performs his own solo electronic music under the alias Moongriffin. Elliot also has a very musically influenced work schedule at an electric bass/guitar manufacturer, teaching all sorts of private lessons and producing for side projects.

Anton Hatwich // Bass

Bassist and composer Anton Hatwich has been active in Chicago’s musical community since 2002. Although he occasionally appears as a sideman to various songwriters and rock bands, Hatwich is best known for his work amongst the post-Vandermark generation of Chicago improvisors. He maintains a nearly constant pace of performing, composing, teaching, recording, and touring throughout the year. In addition to his work with the Nick Mazzarella Trio, he performs regularly in groups led by Keefe Jackson, Josh Berman, Aram Shelton, Paul Giallorenzo, and Nick Broste.

Charles Rumback // drums

Charles Rumback is a figure of the rich and varied Chicago music scene. Though he is known more for his work as a sideman and collaborator, he also leads his own band. His first album as a leader was released on Clean Feed Records in 2009. Some of his current projects include Colorlist, Leaf Bird and Stirrup [a collaborative trio with Fred Lonberg-Holm and Nick Macri]. Charles’ playing deals closely with the jazz tradition, yet his work with artists from a wide variety of backgrounds shows that he doesn’t believe in the limitations of style or genre. Some of the artists Charles has worked with: Jason Ajemian, Asuna, Azita, Leroy Bach, Costa Music, Caroline Davis, Josh Eustis, John Hughes, L’altra, Leaves, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Paul Giallorenzo, the Horse’s Ha, Matt Lux, Bill Mackay, Nick Macri, the Medium Necks, Ron Miles, Jeff Parker, Liz Payne, Jason Stein, and Via Tania.

This is an instant classic, take a listen to this special recording by some of future jazz’s most promising players.

If you’re in Chicago Sunday January 20th, don’t miss Elliot Ross and Charles Rumback live alongside a host of other musicians for a night of ambient electronicists including NYC trumpeter Justin Walter of the Afrobeat outfit Nomo, Quin Kirchner and Erik Hall [Nomo, In Tall Buildings], Fred Lonberg-Holm, Tyler Beach, and Larry Robertson.
