DRM Chair Makes A Statement

What would the world be like if we applied the DRM concept of access control technology – that has become so popularly applied [and hated] to digital music for instance, to other everyday things?

Enter the DRM Chair, a 48 hour long project conceived by a team in switzerland as their entry in a recent event called The Deconstruction which encourages people to assemble a team and re-think the world as we know it. In this instance, we get an art project that is a physical symbol and statement on the concept of DRM.

The DRM Chair has only a limited number of use before it self-destructs. The number of use was set to 8, so everyone could sit down and enjoy a single time the chair. A small sensor detects when someone sits and decrements a counter. Every time someone sits up, the chair knocks a number of time to signal how many uses are left. When reaching zero, the self-destruct system is turned on and the structural joints of the chair are melted.

This was a 48h-long project, from concept to final video shooting. Made by Gianfranco Baechtold, Laurent Beirnaert, Pierre Bouvier, Thibault Brevet, Raphaël Constantin, Lionel Dalmazzini, Edina Desboeufs, Arthur Desmet and Thomas Grogan.
